Environmental Testing Results for Green Creek

As part of the planning process for the new athletic fields at the former Pennington School and Garnet Valley High School, the district was required by Concord Township to conduct baseline water testing in Green Creek. Perhaps the only such mandate imposed on a school district project in Pennsylvania, the goal was to check for 6PPD-Quinone, a chemical byproduct from tire wear that can enter waterways through stormwater runoff.

Key Findings:

  • Water samples were taken from four locations along the creek.

  • Two locations showed very low levels of 6PPD-Quinone (8.0 and 2.9 nanograms per liter).

  • Two locations had no detectable levels of the chemical.

  • The levels found are far below the EPA's environmental safety threshold (8,900 nanograms per liter).

What This Means:

  • These results indicate that 6PPD-Quinone is present in extremely small amounts in some parts of Green Creek, which is consistent with findings in waterways near developed areas. The detected levels are not a concern for environmental or public health based on EPA guidelines.

Next Steps:

  • We will continue working with environmental consultants to ensure compliance with all township requirements as we move forward with the project.
